Learn to Defeat Addiction
“The motivational force of an individual is to find meaning in life” -Victor Frankl
Many of us have had personal experience with someone close to us, whose life has been pulled off course from the impact of addiction. Perhaps you, yourself have, or would like to break free from the chains of a substance or process addiction.
Addiction has been a lifelong battle for my immediate family that has been passed down through the generations. It all started with my dad, a functioning alcoholic who cared deeply for his family. However, his addiction slowly took front seat over several important aspects of his life which affected the behaviors of my siblings and me in many ways.
Today, many adults experiment with or use drugs and alcohol to mask the pain they feel inside. Others mask their pain and anxiety by engaging in a process addiction such as gambling, video-gaming, pornography, or food, to name a few. Addictions become a coping mechanism when difficult challenges arise which seem too daunting to handle, and many times are avoided. As a result, self-sabotaging behaviors slowly erode a person’s identity and self-esteem, and life purpose becomes distorted. When unable to create true purpose or happiness in our lives, we tend to use unhealthy distractions as a way to find temporary fulfillment.
When a person decides to break free from the briar bush of addiction, they will need the necessary tools, resources, and support from family and friends to begin climbing the mountain to victory. Addiction does not discriminate and therefore, it is necessary for those struggling with any kind of addiction to seek connections with family, true friends, the community, and the source of life.
Practicing wisdom principles to find and strengthen our vital connections can be transformative and empowering. A change of mindset is necessary to establish goals and clear the obstacles on our path that only create heartache, disappointment, and rob us of our dreams.
Addiction continues to plague several members of my family to this day and many people worldwide. Statistics reveal that addiction, in its many forms, is epidemic in nature and contributes to societal decay. It is paramount to be open-minded to new ways of handling challenges in an ever-changing world. It is also important to recognize that a power beyond ourselves is necessary to humble our egos and strengthen our convictions to make positive changes in our lives, and find meaning and purpose in our lives.,
